Our 2nd new Movie of the year was so opposite to Little Women in character but turned out just as enjoyable in a very different way.
My Review - The Gentleman. My Rating 8.5 /10
The trailers for The Gentlemen doesn't give a lot away and either will my Review except to say if you enjoyed the classic black comedy In Bruges (2008) with Colin Farrell,who is one of "The Gentlemen " or Guy Ritchie's "The Snatch "2000 you should really enjoy this film.
If really full on swearing especially the 'C" word offends you ( it doesn't bother me at all if it fits the characters but it may not be your cup of tea.
There is violence more implied and not graphic and the plots fast paced and convoluted but it's so clever and original and very very funny in parts.
I'm really looking forward to seeing it again to catch up on a few plot lines that passed me by.
The performances are all top class especially Hugh Grant who I've never considered a really great actor but I've change my mind after today.
In fact his performances in the last few films he's been in like A Very English Scandal and Paddington 2 up until The Gentlemen I would say have been his best acting roles.
He is cast in The Gentlemen as Fletcher a Private Investigator trying to fleece 20 million from a British gangster hit man cartel. Hugh Grant's performance in my opinion is the funniest detective role to come along since Peter Sellers Chief Inspector Clouseau. He's brilliant as the very camp cunningly conniving Fletcher and his East end drawl is incredibly clever acting.
Often fine performances are due to a good director and Guy Ritchie who directed and wrote the screenplay for The Gentlemen has excelled in this film.
I enjoyed this more than the recent "Knives Out " film which was very good but The Gentlemen I think is in a Class similar to the late Blake Edwards at his best.
The other stand out performances are from Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Pearson an American expat who became rich by building a marijuana empire in London.
A Simplified version of the plot is that when word gets out that Mickey is looking to cash out his business,it soon triggers an array of plots and schemes from those who want his fortune.
Michelle Dockery completely buries any vision of herself as Lady Mary from Downton Abbey in the Gentlemen in her role as Mickey's wife and business partner with a hot gangster moll outfit and figure to match and some red hot lines to match,she's sensational in this role.
In fact all the performances are good we see Henry Golding step out of his nice Asian dude character from Crazy Rich Asians and an angel in Last Christmas to play Dry Eye a young gangster protege trying to take over the territory from his Uncle Wang Young. Harlie Hunam as Raymond and Colin Farrell as Coach also give stand out performances
I was really surprised and delighted by how much I enjoyed The Gentlemen and look forward to seeing it again.

Emilio I think you are misunderstanding the baby Hitler scene. On one hand you have the Russian boy, hitting rock bottom and becoming the personification of hate (no matter how righteous) on the other you have the brilliant scene of reversed but unavoidable long and complex causality, that ends/starts with the personification of innocence, a baby. The scene is not about shooting baby Hitler, but about the causality that leads to such horrors. There is no reason to hold hope for the boy not turning into a monster later on. And it's a shame not pointing out the genius of the following scene, probably the best ending in movie history, with the partisans filmed from behind and walking forward and then coming from all directions, as if the entire humankind is stuck in that cold forest. There's nothing patriotic or pleasant about it. There's no come with us message. You can feel them moving on into history, while the camera points up at the sky, director's job done, a glimpse of ongoing reality shown, an instant of horrid causality that has been since forever and will be forever. Excuse my language, but it's fucking brilliant.

What struck me most when watching "Come and See" was that it really made me experience what it must be like to be surrounded by war; to have it in your own back yard. The last war that was fought actually IN the United States was the Civil War (us fighting ourselves nearly 150 years ago. Of course, how can we understand what it's like for people in Iraq when we come into their country and bomb their homes and kill innocent people (sometimes women and children) in the process? Unlike "Saving Private Ryan" and many other war films that use extensive choreographed battle sequences, Come and See" manages to show the horrors of war without glorifying violence at the same time. Through the use of incredible young actors and devastating scenes that engage all the senses, Come and See" causes the viewer to lose their own innocence and gradually question their own sanity as they share Florya's journey into the agonizing horrors of war. I can't imagine anyone seeing a film like this and still advocating unnecessary wars like the one in Iraq.

When you hear a movie you're going to watch is a war movie, you expect exciting gun battles, spectacular explosions, and maybe a few depressing scenes towards the end that ultimately give you that warm patriotic feeling inside. In "Come and See" you'll only see depressing scenes that will fill you with nothing but sorrow and anger.
Of all of the holocaust/ World War II movies I've seen, nothing has made me feel such anger towards the actions of the Nazis like this movie has. Most war movies portray Nazis as mindless killing machines that are hard to hate since they appear to be the mechanical dogs of Hitler. In this film, the German characters had a real human side to them which made them much easier to hate when they would go out of their way to make sure Russian peasants suffered some of the most excruciating deaths possible for means of entertainment for the Nazis.
Every character in this film is very real and the young protagonist will certainly leave an impression on you long after you have viewed this film. This is a powerful movie that will stick with you, but I advise the reader to watch it at a strategic time because it will definitely wreck the rest of your day when you see it.

Wonderful deep review. I have loved and promoted this movie for a decade. It's tells of war like no other. About the end sequence with Flora (sp) repeatedly shooting the picture of Hitler with time regressing film sequences back to baby Hitler, where, he does not shoot. Could it also relate to the sad fact that we are all products of our times and environments, and innocent at birth.

It's an utterly brutal film, far outstripping the horrors of Holocaust or Shoah. No 'Hollywood style' romanticism in it either à la Enemy at the Gate or other blockbuster titles. It's just Grim, really, REALLY Grim. Definitely 'One To Watch. but likely only the once. Whilst the movie does include major events and of Wallace's life much of it is pure fantasy rewritten for a movie ausiance, for example the meeting between princess isobel and wallace did take place but the likelehood of a romance or her suplying him with intelligence on troop movements is unlikly as she was aged 12 at the time of the meeting.
That being said the movie itself it very good Gibson Is excellent and whilst the movie is very much a one man show the supporting cast perform very well, notably Patrick Magoohan and Sophie Marceau. The battle sequences are of epic proportions and the scenery spectacular. This setting gives it a distinct character and style which combine to make this a film that you will remember for a long time.

Sophie Marceau and Angus Macfadyen also played their role pretty well as Princess Isabelle and Robert the Bruce respectively. Most of the people believe that it was not the perfect depiction of the life of the Scotland legend but still it was not that easy for any other director other than Gibson to portray the life of Wallace in just 177 min.

The film is directed by Jeff Fowler (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It also stars James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the film, Sonic teams up with a small-town sheriff named Tom as he attempts to escape Dr. Robotnik and the government. In 2013, Sony Pictures acquired the film rights to the franchise, and by 2014, had a movie adaptation in development. Fowler was hired to direct in 2016. After Sony put the project in turnaround, Paramount Pictures acquired it in 2017, and the majority of the cast had signed on by August 2018. Filming took place between July and October 2018 in Ladysmith and Parksville both on Vancouver Island, and in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is the first entry in a planned film series. [5] Sonic the Hedgehog was initially scheduled to be released in the United States on November 8, 2019, but was delayed to February 14, 2020 after an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the first trailer, which was released on April 30, 2019. Paramount delayed the film in order to redesign Sonic, whose original design drew the most criticism. The redesign was shown in a new trailer that was released worldwide on November 12, 2019. The second trailer was well-received for its tone and humor with Sonic's redesign receiving particular praise with many noting how similar it is to Sonic's main design in the games. Premise Sonic ( Ben Schwartz) a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog from another world, comes to Earth to escape malevolent forces that seek to harness his power of super-speed. After accidentally causing a massive power outage and hiding out in the town of Green Hills, Montana, Sonic is targeted by the government who then hire the tyrannical roboticist Dr. Robotnik ( Jim Carrey) to hunt him down. Meanwhile, ex- SFPD officer-turned-Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski ( James Marsden) meets Sonic and decides to help him evade capture, collect his rings and stop Robotnik from using Sonic's powers for world domination. [18] 19] 20] Production Development Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the rights to produce and distribute a film based on Sonic the Hedgehog in 2013. [21] On June 10, 2014, a live-action animated film was announced as a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet. [22] It would be produced by Neal H. Moritz by his Original Film banner alongside Takeshi Ito, Mie Onishi, and Toru Nakahara, and written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. [22] In February 2016, Sega CEO Hajime Satomi said the film was scheduled for 2018. [23] Blur Studio 's Tim Miller and Jeff Fowler were hired in 2016 to develop it; Fowler would make his feature directorial debut, and Miller and Fowler would executive produce. [24] Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel were writing the screenplay, while Casey and Miller wrote the story. [24] 25] On October 2, 2017, Paramount Pictures announced that they had acquired the rights after Sony's Columbia Pictures put the film into turnaround. Most of the production team remained unchanged. [26] In February 2018, it was announced that the movie would be released in November 2019. [27] 28] Casting On May 29, 2018, it was reported that Paul Rudd was in talks for a lead role as Tom, a cop who befriends Sonic and will likely team up to defeat Dr. Robotnik. but was later denied. [29] A day later, it was announced that James Marsden was cast in an undisclosed role, but later revealed to be Tom Wachowski. [11] In June 2018, Tika Sumpter was cast. Jim Carrey was cast to play the villain, Doctor Eggman, here renamed to his original Western name of Dr. Robotnik. [10] In August 2018, Ben Schwartz joined as the voice of Sonic. [17] Filming Principal photography took place from July 24, 2018 and ended in Vancouver, Ladysmith, and Vancouver Island on October 16, 2018. Post-production and additional photography took place in October in New York, where Carrey shot his scenes. [33] The production team created a realistic version of Sonic using computer animation, adding fur, new running sneakers (which turn out to be the Puma Speed 500's in Red) two separate eyes, 34] and a more humanlike physique. [35] They used Ted, the living teddy bear from the Ted films, as a reference to insert a CG character into a real-world setting. Executive producer Tim Miller said: It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It's part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature. According to Miller, Sega was not "entirely happy" with the design of Sonic's eyes. [34] On May 2, 2019, in response to criticism of the design, Fowler announced on Twitter that Sonic would be redesigned. [36] The November release date was delayed to February 14, 2020 as a result. [37] Artist Tyson Hesse, who worked on previous Sonic the Hedgehog media, was brought on to lead the redesign. For the redesign, Sonic was given larger and differently colored eyes, new running sneakers (based on Women's Dare Mesh Sneakers made from Puma, which also resemble the original Sonic sneakers from the games) white gloves, and a less humanlike body in order to resemble the character's design in the video games. [38] It is estimated that the delay of the film and the redesign of Sonic put the film 5 million or less over its original budget of 90 million for a total of 95 million. [3] Music In February 2019, Tom Holkenborg, who previously worked with executive producer Tim Miller on Deadpool, signed on to compose the score. [39] It will be released alongside the movie on February 14, 2020. Riff Raff, who has a role in the film, will also appear on the soundtrack. [40] An original song titled "Speed Me Up" by Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla ign, Lil Yachty, and Sueco The Child will appear in the film's soundtrack; the single was publicly released on January 24 on Atlantic Records. [41] Marketing Sonic's initial design received heavy criticism from Sonic fans for his overly humanoid appearance and lack of similarities to his game appearance. Fowler confirmed on May 2, 2019 that his design would be changed, with the film also being delayed for three months. [36] Test footage was screened at the Comic Con Experience in Brazil on December 6, 2018. [42] A teaser poster was released on December 10, 2018, revealing the silhouette design of Sonic. [34] It received a mostly negative response from critics and fans, 43] and was compared unfavorably to another 2019 video game film adaptation, Detective Pikachu, which had added fur and skin textures to the Pokémon characters in a much more successful manner. [35] His humanoid appearance was described as evoking an uncanny valley -type of repulsive response by viewers. [44] Former members of Sonic Team, who created the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, also expressed surprise at the design. [45] A second poster was leaked online shortly after the release of the first. Fans complained of a lack of resemblance to the games and criticized the positioning of Sonic's legs, spawning an Internet meme in which users recreated the position. [46] 47] The film's official Twitter account posted an image of Sonic behind a sign reading: Can't a guy work out. 48] Images of the Sonic design were leaked in March 2019 to more fan criticism. Former Sonic Team president and Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka was "shocked" by the design and felt the ratio of Sonic's head and abdomen was imbalanced. [49] According to animator Max Schneider, Paramount expected that Sonic fans would object to the redesign but that general audiences would not care, as had been the case with their 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. He said Paramount felt the design gelled with the real-world setting and characters. [50] The first trailer premiered on April 4, 2019 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, 51] and was released online on April 30. It experienced a highly negative reception, 52] 53] 54] with Gita Jackson of Kotaku calling it "horrific" and "a blight upon this weary earth. 52] Sonic's design was criticized, particularly for his overly humanoid appearance, 52] 54] while some writers found the use of Coolio 's " Gangsta's Paradise " out-of-place. [55] 56] Conversely, CNET ' s Sean Keane praised the humor and references to the games. [57] Within two days of its release, the trailer had been viewed more than 20   million times on YouTube, and had received hundreds of thousands of "dislike" ratings which drastically outnumbered the "like" ratings. [58] Paramount deleted the original trailer from its YouTube channel around the same time when the new trailer was released. A second trailer revealing the redesigned Sonic was released on November 12, 2019. [59] The trailer received far more positive responses, with many praising Sonic's new design. The tone and the humor also received positive reviews. [60] Naka said he felt the new design was "much more Sonic-like. 61] Schneider said the redesign took around 5 months and was achieved without stressful overtime. [50] The second trailer received the highest like-to-dislike ratio of any trailer on Google in the last three years. [62] As a promotional tie-in for the film's release, the movie version of Sonic was added as a playable character to the Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces mobile games. [63] Release Sonic the Hedgehog was originally scheduled to be released sometime in 2018 by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label, but in February 2018, shortly after taking over the rights, Paramount Pictures rescheduled it to November 15, 2019. [65] Following the announcement of the character's redesign in May 2019, director Jeff Fowler announced that the film would again be delayed for just one last time to February 14, 2020, to get "a little more time to make Sonic just right. 66] The redesign was later shown in a new trailer released worldwide on November 12, 2019. The film's world premiere took place at the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles on January 25, 2020. [67] Box office In the United States and Canada, Sonic the Hedgehog will be released alongside Fantasy Island and The Photograph, and is projected to gross 41–47 million over in its four-day opening weekend. The year is 1957. Joan of Arc is being burned at the stake for what she believes. And, in real life, Jean Seberg on that movies set is also being burnt by director Otto Preminger, making for an auspicious, scarring screen debut – an experience that reminds us immediately that the world remains a mans one, with women considered collateral damage along the way. Its no wonder, then, that Kristen Stewart, one of the most talented and interesting actors of modern cinema, should choose to play Seberg in a biopic that follows Jeans own principled stand – in support of civil rights. While Stewart is excellent, though, the film never quite lives up to her performance. Flying to America in the 1960s, the French New Wave star meets Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie) an activist connected to the Black Panthers. A shared salute in solidarity on the runway later, and Jean finds herself going to his place for a discussion of how she can make a difference – along with other, more intimate interactions. That, however, puts her on the radar of the FBIs surveillance team – specifically, agent Jack Solomon (Jack OConnell) who is tasked with capturing her every move with the aim of gathering information and ultimately discrediting the Black Power movement. Its a plot thats right out of a movie, so its easy to see why writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse chose to turn the events into a screenplay. But with so many players in this complex game of cat and mouse, the result suffers from not choosing to focus on one specific person or thing: theres sinister intrigue in the Bureaus actions, including the domestic dynamics that surround Jacks colleague, Carl (played with stern conservative morals by Vince Vaughn) theres a moving turn by Zazie Beetz (soon to be seen in Joker) as Dorothy, the wife of Hakim, who finds in Sebergs glamorous do-gooder an unwelcome threat; and theres suspense in Jeans growing paranoia about being watched, which puts a strain on her marriage with fellow creative Romain Gary (Yvan Attal. Amid all that, Jean Seberg is, somewhat ironically, slightly lost on screen; like the voyeuristic relationship at the films core, shes a somewhat distant figure to be gazed upon. With the script dropping more than the occasional clunky line of dialogue to try and cram all of these characters and plotting into a conventional two-hour thriller, its no coincidence that the best moments of Seberg are when Kristen Stewart steals a moment for herself, often in silence; after years of playing introverted characters with a knack for conveying inner conflict, its a treat to see Stewart fuse that intensity with old-fashioned movie stardom, shining with a charisma that matches Jeans sun-yellow dresses and beach-blonde hair. DoP Rachel Morrison (Mudbound, Black Panther) works with Andrews to recreate the period with a gorgeous sense of colour – even in the opening recreation of Premingers Joan of Arc. But Seberg is lacking the same substance its leading lady evidently possesses in spades. The film tellingly never works out the best place to conclude its story (a wayward prologue involving Jack and Jean should be a thoughtful climax but doesnt provide any closure) despite its authenticity, and Kristen Stewarts convincing performance, for a film about someone sticking up for their beliefs, Seberg is slightly lacking in staying power. Seberg is an Amazon Studios production with no UK distributor currently in place for a theatrical release.

Seberg (Benedict Andrews) is an affair drama which is an interpretation of a real story. Combining the lead character's professional and personal roles, it explores her personal and relational lives.
Kristen Stewart gives a slightly contrite performance and she seems to have been once again typecast. Thankfully, the supporting cast are there with good performances to make up for the lack of personal connection with the main character. Unfortunately the excellent costume design is not enough to carry the film and will likely be overlooked.
Speaking after a screening at TIFF, the director explained the film is really a story of voyeurism; the addiction and danger of the watcher and watched. Even so, the excitement of surveillance is lost on an emotional contrived performance.
